'This ink drawing was made directly from nature on a river bank one summer day in 1984, and is one of an ongoing series of drawings and paintings on the theme of rivers of France and Spain.

My working practice involves the taking of notes on site so that any paintings made later in the studio can be developed within and beyond that experience. Photographs are not used, meaning a natural energy is retained. The choice of materials is particular – a fine pen line to describe the complex undergrowth, and washes to describe woodland shadows and reflections in the water.'
