'A clump of trees survive in a barren landscape. The land is Spain – explored by Lely over the years and where unusual locations are experienced. This is one of a set of studio works depicting natural forms in a wild landscape. Here was the challenge of imbuing objects, in this case trees, gullies and slopes with a sense of presence. To heighten this effect, an intense velvet black describes the trees which are placed against greens, ochres and browns.'
